There are over 25,000 types of orchids and, in fact the Orchidaceae family is the most numerous in the plant world! These beautiful plants have been around for over 100 million years and plants can range from microscopic to reaching several feet in height. Although we think of orchids as a tropical flower they can actually grow in almost any climate. They can grow on the ground or on trees and even rocks. Orchids are classified depending on their water requirements. Paphiopedilum, Cymbidium and Odontoglossum need a moist environment all year long. Cattelya, Oncidium and Dendrobium only need water when they are actively growing and the vanda Ascocend doesn't really need water at all.

Cymbidium orchids are some of the most popular having 40 species and thousands of hybrids. These are one of the oldest cultivated orchids and can grow on the ground, on trees or on rocks. They can be found growing naturally in Japan, China, South East Asia and Australia. These are one of the easiest orchids for beginners and will flower every year if cared for properly.

Perhaps the most exotic of all orchids is the Cattleya which hails from South America. These are the orchids most typically chosen for corsages, however they have been over collected and many of these types of orchids are now endangered.

The Denrobiums are the second largest orchid genus and have over a thousand species. These flowers can be found in Northern India, South East Asia, Australia and Polynesia. They typically grow near the equator in tropical conditions, although some grow in climates with dry winters. While these are easy to grow, it is rather difficult to get them to bloom regularly.

Phalaenopsis orchids have long lasting flower and are rather easy to grow. These flowers are favorites at weddings and can be colorful in pinks, yellows and stripes. These are native to the Philippines and are quickly becoming a popular house plant.

Vanda orchids are another plant that is rather easy to grow. These plants produce flowers in vibrant colors such as blue, red, yeloow and orange. Flower spikes can have as much as 10 blooms that last for several weeks.

Orchids are a bit finicky to grow but these delicate plants will reward you with a soothing fragrance and beautiful distinct flowers. Cattleyas

With warmer temperatures and the sunlight increasing spring cannot be far away. This is when many cattleyas bloom. And as you know, cattleyas are the known for their fragrance.

On some of the plants you may see a yellow sheath which is protecting some of the buds. This sheath can be removed to allow the orchid to bloom. Be careful when it is removed so the bud isn't damaged. You will be rewarded with a wonderful flowering orchid.

Light in the spring will play tricks on us. It is nothing to have bright days following a day of rain. With the bright days comes a chance for the plant to become "sun-burned" and damage the looks of the orchid. It is advantageous for the cattleya to have some partial shading so this can be prevented.

With the days getting longer this means the plants will require perhaps more watering and also will need more fertilizing. It should be done every week with a weak solution of fertilizer. What is meant by weak? Instead of following the directions for full strength, cut the fertilizer used in half. This gives you a half-strength solution which can be used weekly.

Phalenopsis

This is the month you will see your phals be at their peak for blooming. There are wonderful displays of wide arching phal and the blooming can go on for over a month with the flowers staying for 2-3 months. Now is when you will need to do some careful staking of the spikes. It will not only help the plant but will display it so the flowing arches looking fantastic.

Remember again, more water and fertilizer are needed during the blooming season. The plants metabolism really revs up during this budding time.

Diseases are another potential during the blooming season. Especially, mealy bugs and scales. This may be spotted by the slimy exudates they leave on the branches. Treat these early so they don't destroy the flowers or the treatment doesn't harm the flowers.

Paphs / Lady Slippers

For our paphs, especially those that are summer bloomers, it is a good time to see if they need to be re-potted. Also, check for disease on these orchids. Mealy bugs are the most frequent visitors. It is great time to treat the plants. Most plant lovers set up a time, usually weekly or monthly to thoroughly look at the orchids for any sign of disease. If you do this on a regular basis your plants will certainly be able to treated early and easily.

The longer light of the day gives more energy to paphs. You will see the spikes develop and the buds start with the help of longer days. It's great to see how these wonderful orchids grow in front of your eyes.

Orchids Will Bloom Again

How long does it take for an orchid plant to rebloom? The answer is: it depends. I'm not trying to avoid your question, just being truthful. The truth of the matter of when an orchid will bloom again depends upon what kind of orchid it is. Most orchids will produce blooms once a year but there are some which are capable of producing blooms several time a year if the growing conditions are just right, if not quite right they should still bloom once a year. Since your orchid was in bloom last Christmas, my guess is that it should do so at that time again.

Since it is already October, if it were to bloom at Christmas time this year, it should be showing evidence of a new flower stem growing. But, depending upon what kind of orchid you have, it can take from one month to six months for a new flower stem to be in full bloom once it begins to grow.

On most orchids, once the flowers have all died and fallen off, you may remove the stem by cutting it off down near the base of the flower stem. Prior to cutting off the stem, take a look at the top or tip of the stem to see if it has begun to dry, if it does start to dry that means the stem is dying and may be removed. If there are any bulbs on the orchid, you should leave them alone as they are a store of moisture and nutrients for the orchid.

Most dendrobiums are not that hard to grow but getting them to bloom reliably is the hard part. Moving them to Florida will make it easier. Why? The climate and sunshine it will receive all year round rather than the cold darkness in Indiana. Dendrobiums prefer warm bright weather, they will sulk and even die under cold dark conditions.

From your description of them, I take it that they are of the evergreen family of dendrobiums. If they were from the deciduous family you would have mentioned that some of the growths had lost all their leaves. The primary difference between the two families is that evergreens do not like dry conditions while deciduous ones need a pronounced dry period.

The choice of orchid pot you use, the potting medium, watering, fertilizing and location will all have an impact on the success of your orchids. Let us have a look at different containers that you can choose from. The choice can be bewildering if you are a beginner to orchid growing. These are most commonly made from either plastic or terracotta clay.

Plastic Orchid Pot

• A lightweight plastic pot, which may have several drainage holes is more suitable for indoors, where it is far less likely to be blown over.

• The growing medium tends to dry out more slowly than in a clay pot.

• The best plastic pot has a thick wall that does not break easily, it is light in color, and does not heat up too much in strong sunlight. Clear polythene pots are becoming popular as they allow more light to reach the roots.

Terracotta Orchid Pot

• It is heavier and therefore more stable.

• It has one drainage hole in the bottom, although some specialist orchid pots also have drainage holes on the sides.

• A succulent drought-tolerant epiphytic orchid fares better in a clay pot, as there is less chance of the growing medium becoming waterlogged.

Pots or large planters made from terracotta, wood, ceramic or plastic make ideal containers for large spreading orchids such as "Cymbidia".

A terrestrial like the "Chinese Cymbidium" requires a tall orchid pot which can accommodate the very long roots (up to a meter!) that it can produce. Unrestricted root growth allows the orchid to store nutrients and water that can then sustain the development of superior flowers.

"Jewel" orchids such as "Ludisia" and "Anoectochilus" should ideally be grown in a shallow, broad pot as they spread over the surface. A glass terranium would be ideal, where the orchids can wander in whatever way they like.

There are also varieties of orchid that are best grown and displayed in baskets at eye level.

Basket Orchid Pot

• A basket is very suitable for orchids with pendant flowers, or heavy- rooted, sprawling orchids.

• A basket container is made of wire, plastic, mesh, wood or pottery.

• It allows air to circulate around the compost and roots.

• A mesh orchid pot is essential for the successful blooming of Draculas because the inflorescences find it easy to grow through the underside of the container.

• Orchids like "Stanhopea", "Gongora" and "Acineta" should be grown in open baskets so that their pendant flowers can be enjoyed to the full.

• You will need to take care that the orchids do not dry out in a basket.

As an orchid pot, the basket will need support blocks for your orchid. The most suitable materials are cork, or the bark of pine or oak. To do this, place the plant compost in front and behind the roots. Tie the plant to the piece of bark in such a way that no water is able to run into the centre of the plant. You can tie up the plant with strips of ladies tights!

One tip is to be aware that the fine roots of some orchids may penetrate the support block and make it difficult to re-pot your orchid.

When a plant becomes overgrown or begins to fall apart, just tie a new piece of bark to the old one so that the orchid grows onto this. Some orchids like Oncidiums have slender roots that rapidly travel over the surface of the bark.

"Lady-of-the-Night" is the popular name for "Brassavola nodosa", a night-fragrant white flowering orchid that grows well in a hanging basket. Position it where its night fragrance can be appreciated. It is drought-tolerant, but prefers additional water during dry spells.

The orchid "Cattleya skinneri - Hettie Jacobs" can grow to enormous size in a basket and needs strong support. But it does produce clusters of lovely purple flowers between March and May.

The popular "Bee" orchid, produces a wealth of golden yellow flowers even from a modest plant. A 20inch (50cm) wire basket with substantial pieces of bark will support a large plant of this kind.

You might like to plant a selection of moth orchids in a large basket for a superb show of long-lasting blooms, but these do not like strong sunlight. Or maybe vanda orchids, that provide flowers in all colours of the rainbow with huge blooms, some of which can be the size of a saucer. Vanda will produce a mass of lengthy roots hanging below the orchid pot, which you will need to spray with water daily. Do not be tempted to cut back these roots.

Be aware also that many orchids thrive on being pot-bound. It may look as if the roots are smothering the pot, but it is their thick root system that nourishes spectacular blooms. So do not be in a hurry to re-pot too soon!

Whatever type of orchid pot you want, there is a wide range from which to choose. If you love growing orchids, there is great pleasure in matching an orchid with an appropriate orchid pot, choosing the right compost, light and temperature, water and fertilizer. Cymbidiums Orchid Plants - What You Need To Grow Successfully

Cymbidium orchid plants were first mentioned in China during the Chin dynasty. Yes, way back in 265 AD. They are beautiful, delicate orchid plants which have been used for corsages. They come in a wide range of colors, including reds, yellows, whites and others.

And now they are grown for the florist industry because of their large flowers, about 5+ inches. The flowers on the cymbidium orchid last for five to seven weeks. Cymbidiums are used for corsage orchids.

There are other cymbidiums which do not have as large flowers, but have an intermediate size flower. One of these is the cymbidium 'Royale'.

These plants grow well outdoors and can take cool temps and even a short freeze, to about 28 degrees F. But once this occurs bring the orchid indoors.

Cymbidium orchid plants usually bloom from February to May. During the summer months they will do better with cooler soil at night. If this is a problem in your region my suggestion is to add ice water to the soil after sunset during the month of August.

Water them well especially during their growth period, March through September. After this you can water the cymbidium orchid plants less but not allowing them to dry out.

Also, don't rush to repot. Let the orchids get pot-bound and the psueodpods can get pushed out to the edges of the pot. Only then repot. They do better when in close quarters.

These plants do need good lighting for good growth. So, don't park them under a tree.

Also, year round fertilizer is necessary. You can use a liquid fertilizer which is balanced or even a timed-release version. During the cymbidium orchid plants growth phase you will need to give them a supplement fertilizer as well.

Cymbidium orchid plants can produce some of the largest flowers and ones which will last 5- 7 weeks amid the wash of great colors.

Next to the rose, orchids are the flowers most in demand in both the private and commercial marketplace. No plant family has as many different flowers as the orchid family. Orchids are known to grow in most every part of the world with the exception of Antarctica and the deserts.

Such as rain water, litter, humus, and even from their own dead tissue. Orchids are also one of the most adaptable plant groups on earth. Some Australian orchids grow entirely underground.

Those orchids we plant in our gardens are known as terrestrial plants and are planted in the soil just like most any other flower. If your area isn't conducive to growing orchids, you can still grow them in a hothouse. Be patient, however. The seeds of an orchid are extremely tiny. Under natural circumstances, the seeds can only germinate with the use of a special fungi. It takes anywhere from one to ten years for an orchid seedling to mature.

The ideal place in the home for growing orchids is a bright window, free from drafts, where your plants receive indirect sunlight both morning and afternoon. (A south window is best.) In winter, give orchids all the light possible. the equivalent to a bright south-facing window. With extra large windows or especially intense sunlight, the light may be adjusted downward by moving plants 18 to 36 inches from the window. Plants in the home require a greater light intensity because they receive light from only one direction, while in a greenhouse they receive light from many sides.

One orchid genre is commercially important other than for the value of the flowers. The vanilla orchid is used as a flavoring, and indeed is the source of vanilla. The underground tubers of terrestrial orchids are ground to a powder and used for cooking. Interestingly enough, the Coca-Cola Company is the world's largest user of vanilla. Because vanilla is such a labor intensive crop due to having to hand-pollinate the flowers, it is most suited to small family farms.

The scent of orchids is frequently used by perfumists. With these exceptions, orchids have virtually no commercial value other than for the enjoyment of the flowers.

Both tropical and subtropical orchids are available at nurseries and through orchid clubs across the world. There are also quite a few orchids which grow in colder climates, although these may be more difficult to find. Watering

One of the big mistakes that people make is over watering their orchids. People assume that since they are tropical plants they need a lot of water and this is not necessarily the case. While they do appreciate the humid environment, over watering can kill them.

The amount of watering necessary depends on the temperature any type of orchid a general rule of thumb is to water once a week. You may want to water more frequently in the summer and a little bit less in the winter. The Cymbidium, Miltonia, Odontoglossum and Paphiopedilum varieties like to be kept with the soil a bit moist even between wanterings while the Ascocenda, Vanda and Phalaenopsis prefer to have their soil become dry in between.

Fertilizing

Proper fertilization is an important part of orchid care as it is for caring for any plant. You want to be sure that you use a fertilizer that is formulated specifically for orchids and follow the directions to the tee.
Fertilizing too much or too little could harm your plant.

Light

Providing your orchids with the right amount of light is important for its care as well as to be sure that it blooms. Some orchids like the dendrobiums and cattleyas like to have a lot of light so you want to place them in a south facing window but take care that their leaves do not burn in the hot summer sun. Paphiopedilums and phalaaenopsis, on the other hand, prefer less light so you want to make sure that they are placed further away from the window. Generally speaking, you want your work is to get about 12 hours of light a day. if you cannot provide them with natural sunlight you can always get a growing light but be sure that you do not leave it on for more than 12 hours.

Repotting

If you take good care of your orchids they may last for several years and you want to think about repotting them every two years. You want to wait until the plant is not in bloom. Choose a pot that is a bit larger than the one you currently have an orchid and and be sure to remove all the dead roots before putting it In the new pot. Let it adjust to his new home for about a week before you start with your watering and fertilization schedule.

Basic orchid care is not that different from caring for any other plant. Just like other plants they need light water and food as well as a proper home with adequate room for their roots to spread. Dendrobium orchids are mostly found in tropical areas, but some have adapted to more cooler climates. Some species grow on trees, while a few can be found growing on rocks. Some of these plants shed their leaves in the fall or water, while others are evergreen. If you're interested in growing one, there are a few things you need to know. Air
It's important to provide good air movement. This will help prevent water from accumulating and leading to the formation of mold. You can simply open up a window in the room to provide adequate air movement. A small fan can also be used, but it shouldn't be pointed directly at your plant.

Temperature
As mentioned earlier, dendrobium orchids are usually found in tropical areas. It's best that you provide a temperature range between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. At night, a range between 65 and 75 is good. You can expose the plant to extremely cold or hot temperatures for a short time without causing major damage.

Water
These orchids usually grow on trees in the wild. This means that they are used to drying out before being given water again. When growing one of these plants in your home, you should let the potting medium dry out thoroughly before you provide more water.

Light
You should provide your dendrobium orchids with full sun in the morning. Just before noon until late afternoon, you should provide more shading. The best way to grow one in your home is to use an overhead light.

Repotting
Dendrobiums should be placed in a new pot every two years. This should be done during the spring after the plant has bloomed or produced new growth. Medium-grade fir bark works well when growing these orchids in a larger pot. If you're using a relatively small pot, then you can use fine-grade fir bark instead.
